WorkShops

Ocean Awareness Workshop

Things everyone should know as water dwellers. In this workshop we will talk through elements of how to read environmental conditions including how to forecast and weather check online. Topics will cover tides, currents, swell, wind, visibility, temperate reefs, resident marine life and more. Talking practically on how this can affect your dive and the dangers they can pose. We will visit multiple dive sites and talk through the varying conditions that we can see from the shore and whether or not they are safe to dive. Throughout the week you will use the tools learnt in this workshop to choose the best location for a shore dive, not only that you will be buddied up and will lead a dive to test out your knowledge!

Water Safety Workshop

Learn how to manage yourself and others safely in the marine environment. From theory to practical application, you will learn valuable skills like how to rescue someone from a shore dive. Other topics will include self rescue, fatigue, blackout rescue and the fun stuff- how to make a tourniquet on the fly, manage wounds large or small (yes, shark bite) and other first aid hacks. As a group we will simulate a rescue scenario where you will put your new skills to action, walking away feeling more prepared than ever.

Sustainable Seafood Workshop

Fishing or purchasing seafood sustainably is crucial to the future of not only our fish stocks but ocean ecosystems as a whole. In this workshop you will be led by a special guest who will be teaching us how to forage for certain types of marine edibles from molluscs, urchin, seaweed and crayfish. You will be guided on how to obtain an appropriate fishing licence, how to prepare the seafood and the range of ways that you can cook and share your catch with friends in a sustainable and fun way!

MEET THE ISLAND:

Lord Howe Island is located 790km northeast of Sydney Australia. An ancient volcano rises from the depths to create one of the most unique locations on the planet. World Heritage Listed in 1982. The island prides itself on a maximum capacity of guests that can stay at any one time which ensures there is always a secluded beach to yourself! Renting and riding your bicycle around the island is the preferred method of transport. The surrounding beaches and bays range from gentle snorkelling coves, to surf beaches, low tide lagoon frolics and cliff hanging coastlines. If the awe inspiring landscapes aren’t enough, the bird life and marine wonderland is sure to steal your heart.

The island is lucky enough to receive the tail end of the East Australian Current which circulates electric blue currents around the island during the summer months. This is ideal freediving conditions, warm water temperatures of 22 - 24 degrees and visibility as far as the eye can see. This mix of tropical and temperate currents has created unique marine habitats that have resulted in numerous endemic species to the area. Lord Howe Island and the surrounding waters support the world’s southernmost tropical coral reef and the only fringing coral reef lagoon in NSW. I can assure that you will be squealing through your snorkel when you witness the magic this creates underwater.

Experience Lord Howe Island

Rock Running

One its super fun! Two its beautiful, but three it is an unreal way to train your body to work under high levels of carbon dioxide, which we as freedivers are learning to embrace!

Shore Dives

We believe the island has specifically evolved for us as divers because there is always a protected cove to explore! Most of our dives together will be from the shore as these are the best skills we can offer you when you leave our side. This can involve a hike with your dive gear on your bike, gearing up on the rocks and swimming out to our dive site. Nothing short of an adventure!

SAMPLE ITINERARY

The following schedule is a guideline, please note that weather is a huge driving factor of activities on the island. Being a rock in the middle of the Tasman Sea, we can experience four seasons in one day. Keep in mind that freedive scheduled days may need to be shuffled to suit favouring weather conditions. If freedive requirements are not met to certification standard during scheduled dives, you will have the opportunity to try again on your days off if necessary.

Galapagos Shark Encounter

The Galapagos Whaler shark was first described in the Galapagos however they inhabit all throughout the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Lord Howe Island and surrounding reefs are the only places in Australia you can encounter these inquisitive creatures. Despite their abundance in the area there is very little known about the sharks population and distribution and we need your help to aid in our research efforts through capturing photos.

We will venture out to the deep blue where we know the sharks will come to say hello

Bring your camera and help us document individuals

Identification photos and obscure findings are sent to The Institute of Marine Science Sydney where we are working with some marine scientists to learn more about the species distribution in and around Lord Howe Island

Freedive Training

We have intentionally designed this trip to build on your current skills without the added pressure of ticking off your next freediver level. We believe more comfort, beauty and pleasure is found when you are simply diving for you! No numbers, depths or certificates, just you and your bod on the line. This is our most enjoyed way of diving and are keen to share it with you.

We will have two to three sessions diving on the line. We will tailor the line sessions to your current level working on whatever you desire. Comfort, bottom time, technique, depth, you name it, we’ve got you. We are lucky on Lord Howe we have access to incredible depth and visibility so there is honestly no better place in Aus to get those gills wet and deep!

LIV

I believe there is a huge gap in the market tailored to safety and ocean awareness when it comes to freediving and exploring the ocean as a whole. Anyone can go and do a freedive course, or an instructors course for that matter, but what knowledge does a beginner freediver have about their local surroundings? We have created a safe space to educate and train you into a well equipped freediver ready to embrace the ocean and its elements.

With over 10 years of exerperience in the Marine Tourism Industry as a water guide, deckhand, skipper and dive leader, I have acquired the skills to predict, prevent and act in dangerous scenarios in the ocean. Understanding your own ability is one thing, but looking out for the safety of others is a whole other ball game when it comes to the ocean and managing dives or group water activities. This space is something I am super passionate about and excited to offer to water dwellers as it is invaluable knowledge if you are one who spends alot of time in the water.

Georgie

The ocean is a big, beautiful and sometimes scary place. My passion is to work with others to overcome their fears through education and empowerment. My hope is that people will leave this trip feeling confident to safely plan a dive, take friends with them, and maybe even cook them dinner afterwards. Freediving is so much more than a course, it’s a way of interacting and living with the ocean. Drawing on my expertise as an emergency nurse, we will work through scenarios so you’re able to respond to emergencies using whatever tools are available to you. Build confidence through knowledge and trust in yourself.

Bachelor of Nursing with a Post Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nursing, freedive instructor, dive master and deckhand. Georgie has extensive knowledge and experience handling all kinds of emergencies and how to stay cool in those stressful situations.

Testimonials

“After having such an epic experience with Liv and Georgie at Ningaloo in 2023, when I found out they were offering an ocean awareness and freediving weekend at Wye River, it was a no-brainer and I signed up immediately, and I loved every moment! Located in one of the most breathtaking locations on the Victorian coastline, and in awe-inspiring luxury accommodation – whew!! From the hands-on experience of harvesting our own seafood to gaining valuable insights into learning how to read dive conditions and carry out rescue scenarios, every moment was packed with learning and excitement. Liv and Georgie, with their extensive backgrounds in Emergency Nursing and Environmental Science, respectively, have crafted an educational experience that is both enriching and practical. I didn’t know how much I actually needed this weekend! The culinary aspect of the weekend was a standout, with David Moyle and Lilly Trewartha taking the helm in the kitchen. Their passion for food and master chef preparation of dishes, especially the unforgettable abalone moving feast, left us in awe. Their ability to create such inspiring meals from the sea's bounty was truly remarkable. And having special guest, Zach Clark and his shark presentation was icing on top. How lucky we were! I highly recommend this weekend for anyone interested in expanding their ocean toolkit - thanks to the exceptional team that made it so much fun, its branded in the memory bank forever.” - Linda

“I have not met two people who can balance the line of professional and personal like I have with Liv and Georgie. A week on Lord Howe island with them was a timeless experience which felt like one day and a whole month all at once. The laughs we had and the adventures we endured are held as the bets I have experienced. I cannot thank them enough for the energy and experience they poured into this trip and am already plotting and scheming for my next one!” - Georgia

“One of the best weeks of my life! Liv and Georgie are two of the most sunshiney, adventurous, inspiring and genuinely beautiful women I have ever met. Their zest for life, hunger for adventure, love of the natural world and skill and knowledge of diving the deep blue made my 7 days on the magical Lord Howe Island a moment in time I will never forget. I shared the experience with six other wonderful girls craving adventure - we cycled in the rain in wetsuits on the hunt for waterfalls, we learnt the art of freediving in the calming presence of Galapagos Whaler Sharks, we watched the sunrise from atop the Malabar Cliffs and from the crystal clear waters of Ned’s Beach, we got up close and a little personal with the island’s beautiful birdlife, and we experienced the magic of both stunning glass out conditions and little bit of exciting swell! “Choose your own adventure” became the theme of the expedition with endless land and sea activities and adventures available as well as moments of relaxation like sipping takeaway Magaritas in the sunshine on the lagoon pontoon! Liv and Georgie ensured we all felt safe, comfortable and confident in both our island experience and in our freediving journey with no question ever going unanswered! I wouldn’t hesitate for a second in recommending the expeditions these women of the sea have some wonderfully and thoughtfully curated.” - Kate

"Where to start! I spent a week on Lord Howe Island with Liv and Georgie and a group of kind caring ocean loving humans. The week was full of everything! Moments out of your comfort zone but with a supportive circle, adventure, relaxation, exhaustion of the best kind…it was all the things but boy did we LIV! Liv and Georgie are every bit as genuine and authentic as you hope they would be and way beyond. Instagram is a strange world these days and although it has its place it can polish reality. This expedition was everything you could dream it would be in real life. Liv and Georgie went to the next level planning out and considering every moment of the week. Working around weather, tides, and all the other logistics we had no awareness of, to come up with a phenomenal itinerary. They always emphasized the “choose your own adventure” approach ensuring no one felt pressure to do or attend everything, if rest was needed that was supported. Even more than the expert planning though what I really want to emphasize is how they continually included and supported the whole group. They are so good at reading the room. So much of freediving is the mindset and to be able to see what the group and the individuals need in each moment is a depth of insight that sets them apart in my opinion. I am not usually one to get around to writing reviews but I could write a novel for these two. Highly recommended! Take the plunge with Liv For The Sea it will be worth it!” - Angy

“Writing about my week at Lord Howe doesn’t seem fair, how can you put into words the experience that these two amazing wild women seamlessly pulled together. In awe at how Liv and Georige can create such a hilarious, comfortable, inclusive, adventurous and safe environment on a rock in the middle of the ocean, wonder women. What a pleasure to be amongst a group of individuals all simultaneously pushing their individual limits but at the same time, beautifully supporting each other. I’m not usually one for group trips, but this is like nothing else. Liv and Georgie are such incredible guides, teachers & mates. I feel this trip and the energy that LFTS puts out inevitably attracts like minded people and it makes for one hell of a time. I want to sign up everyone I know to their trips.” - Sophie

“My Liv For The Sea expedition was absolutely incredible and exceeded all my expectations. Booking a trip like this was a bit out of my comfort zone but Georgie, Liv and our group made me feel so comfortable to learn and push my freedive limits. The girls are the best instructors and went above and beyond for everyone the trip, which made it so memorable! Lord Howe Island is pure paradise and the most amazing place to explore and learn how to freedive. Our group was so much fun and the week was the perfect combination of diving, hiking, relaxing, amazing food, and fun activities. Couldn’t speak more highly and would do it again in a heartbeat. It was the trip of a lifetime.” - Ally

“Liv and Georgie are totally unreal! They have so much knowledge, not just about diving but about the incredible ecosystems of Lord Howe. I loved learning little bits and pieces about the marine biodiversity of the island. Liv’s background in environmental science and her dedication to ocean conservation really makes her stand out as an instructor. Georgie is a gracious and grounded teacher that can make anyone feel relaxed in the water. They work so well together. I feel so inspired to continue my freediving journey and to keep protecting our beautiful oceans! Thank you gorgeous girls for an unforgettable week!” - Christina

“The Wye River Water Warrior Retreat was my second adventure with Liv for the Sea. I’m starting to think that Liv and Georgie’s company ethos may be ‘Spoil your guests absolutely rotten!’. I learned so many valuable things to add to my Freediving toolbox and gained confidence in myself and my abilities. The location was absolutely amazing, a prime spot to practice the skills we were learning including how to find and plan for a safe dive location, reading weather and ocean conditions, and what to do in an emergency situation. Experiencing how to sustainably source and prepare Abalone was a true highlight as was sharing this whole weekend with amazing likeminded people. I’ve booked my third expedition with Liv for the Sea and already know it will be just like my last two, an experience of a lifetime. Thank you so much Liv and Georgie x” - Carly

“What an incredible week of freediving and adventures in beautiful Lord Howe Island. Both Liv and Georgie are knowledgable, sincere and patient guides and teachers who deliver with energy and passion that truly permeates. We had the chance to freedive and explore the most amazing reefs, encounter friendly sharks and hike beautiful trails. You have the freedom to choose which activities you want to take part in…but I have to say it’s all amazing so you end up jumping on board for all of it! I felt totally safe and calm in Liv and Georgie’s capable hands throughout the whole freediving experience. Not only did I pick up some new diving and life skills, but also got to share all this and more with an amazing crew of likeminded people. I can’t wait to get back in the water! I’ve been on a few expeditions in the past and I have to say this one is curated perfectly and is definitely great value for what you get. I wouldn’t hesitate to book another adventure with Liv For The Sea again! Until next time!” - Ameneh

fAQ’s

  • You can fly with Qantas from Sydney or with Eastern Air Services from Port Macquarie, Newcastle and the Gold Coast.

  • Due to weight restrictions and small plane logistics, Qantas link requires your 23 kgs baggage allowance to be separated into two bags of 14 kg and 9 kg.

  • The grocery stores are more expensive than the mainland due to the costs it takes to get food onto the island. In saying this there is a local nursery selling seasonal vegetables that are very affordable and some locals offer an honesty system stall sharing excess fruit or vegetables from their gardens.

  • It is good to have some cash in hand as the Bowling Club and a few other local spots don’t take credit card. There is an ATM at the Bowling if needed.

  • There is a hospital on island with a great team of nurses and Doctor San who can look after your needs. Don’t forget that Liv For The Sea’s team member Georgie is a qualified and experienced nurse. You are in safe hands!

  • Yes there are three wheeled bicycles or cars you can rent at your own cost. We will be riding our bike to most places.

  • During your expedition with us we will have boat days where we head out to find depth in order to train on the line. We are generally not on the boat too long and aim to get you in the water as soon as possible which should alleviate seasickness. In saying this, sometimes relaxation on the surface of the water can make people feel woozy, but we can work around this. This isn’t a game changer!

  • Lord Howe is literally a rock in the middle of the Tasman Sea and can experience a variety of weather systems within a few days so be sure to pack accordingly.

    • Even in summer a long pair of pants and a jumper is a good idea for cooler nights.

    • Pack a raincoat for the squalls or waterfalls!

    • Good hiking shoes or boots.

    • Sun protection, long sleeves, hat, sarongs, sunglasses etc

    • Walking/ yoga/ meditation clothes

    • Sandals for daily strolls

    • Book, your forms of relaxation

    • Bathers - obviously!!

    • Any food, dietary supplements etc to keep your belly and mind happy!

  • If you don’t own any snorkelling or dive gear that is totally ok. We can provide you with equipment that will be just fine for a beginner freediver course.

  • Diving with your own gear is always more comfy and effective, so if you love what you currently use, please bring it!

    • Mask & snorkel

    • Fins

    • Weight belt (we can provide weights)

    • Wetsuit, when freediving we dive in 5mm all year round. If you only have a 3mm try and bring extra wetsuit layers, hood, socks etc to provide more warmth.

    • Hood & socks if you have them

  • We love that you’re an independent traveller like us! Good for you!! The accommodation is set up as twin share, so yes if you are coming on your own you will be sharing with another guest, the beds will be made as singles. What a way to get to know a like minded individual and share an unforgettable journey, from strangers to mates for life! (If you prefer a private room we may be able to accomodate at an additional cost).

  • Lord Howe is kind of like an old country town in the middle of the sea, so alternative vegan meal options are limited. We apologise in advance. Please bring any nutritional supplements you need with you. Most restaurants can prepare for vegan meals if they have notice.

  • No. There is no telephone service on Lord Howe. You will have access to the internet when connected to wifi. Some cafes have free wifi and your accommodation offers wifi for $20. We recommend adding this to your budget as this is our main means of communication.
