Meet the Ningaloo Reef

World Heritage Listed in 2011, Nyinggulu Reef, or Ningaloo will blow you away with the life that lives beneath the surface. Where the back of the reef boasts a mega fauna highway of manta rays, whales, sharks and more, the lagoon is a sanctuary for turtles, dugongs, rays, dolphins and of course abundant fish and coral species. If the turquoise blues aren’t enough to make you squeal, when you put your mask and snorkel on for the first time and peak below, I can assure you will fall in love just like I did.

Nyinggulu Reef is one of the last remaining marine hot spots on the planet, offering an untouched glimpse into underwater biodiversity. Unlike other reefs that are suffering from mass tourism and environmental damage, Nyinggulu remains a pristine haven for marine life. With minimal human impact, it’s one of the few places where you can still experience an untouched ecosystem.

The reef is a critical sanctuary for species like sea turtles, humpback whales, and the iconic whale shark. Its remoteness and relatively light tourism mean it’s not just a stunning spot for snorkelers and divers, but also a key conservation area, making it a vital location for preserving marine biodiversity. In a world where so many reefs are declining, Nyinggulu stands out as a rare and thriving underwater treasure.

faq’s

  • We will access the Ningaloo Reef via Exmouth, WA. You can fly from Perth to Learmonth, or Melbourne to Learmonth airport and then a bus transfer from Learmonth airport will take you to your accommodation in Exmouth, about 20 minutes away. Alternatively you can drive! It is approximately a 13 hr drive from Perth to Exmouth. Or 8 hours from Broome to Exmouth.

  • We will collect you and transfer you from your accomodation to the boat before and after your trip. If you choose to stay and explore Exmouth and the North West Cape the best option is to hire a car so you can explore some of the nearby beaches and National Park.

  • There is so much to see and do! If you have time, we recommend spending at least few days after the trip exploring the cape range, the national park, local beaches and experiencing the live music in town.

  • If you are just coming for the freedive expedition, please allow one night prior to our departure to ensure you make it on time and partake in our pool session which will be held the day before our departure. If you book a late afternoon or evening flight on the last day of the trip this will be enough time to get you back to town and to the airport.

  • Accommodation on the vessel is very comfortable and cosy! It is a 11.5m catamaran, described as casual luxury on the sea! The bedrooms are spacious with room to sit up and read on your bed, a window to watch the sunrise and closets for clothes and bags. The bathrooms are clean but small with shower, toilet and a basin. There is shared living spaces inside and out. With plenty of bow space to lay out in the sun and relax.

  • For sure! We can drop you off at nearby beaches to ground your sea legs. However the majority of your trip will be spent on your floating home.

  • You will rise and fall to the setting sun on the boat, this means rain hail or shine we are living on the water which is usually not calm like a lake. The boat will rock you to sleep and we can catch some speed once we head out sailing. Sea sickness is a pretty normal thing, if you’re worried, pack some seasickness tablets, we will do our best to accomodate your woozy needs if it comes to this! Don’t let this stop you, we spend a lot of our time within the lagoon which is protected from swell.

  • Unfortunately not..

The West Coast of Australia is known for its wind and wild seas and cloudless skies. We will typically enjoy some windy days on the reef which is always a great excuse to get our sail up and fly across the oceans surface. The Ningaloo Reef sits on the west coast of the North West Cape and commonly experiences glassy mornings and onshore afternoons. You will learn to embrace this and enjoy all the elements of living on the sea!

  • You will need to be equipped with boat life attire! What does this mean you ask? Comfy clothes for all the elements!

    • A pair of long comfy pants and a jumper for the evenings of lounging and rising to the early sun

    • Pack a wind proof jacket so you can embrace the elements

    • Sun protection, long sleeves, hat, sarongs, sunglasses etc

    • Yoga/ meditation clothes

    • Book, your items for relaxation

    • Bathers - obviously!!

    • Any food, treats, dietary supplements etc to keep your belly and mind happy!

  • If you don’t own any snorkelling or dive gear that is ok we provide, masks and snorkels, weight belts and weights, and some fins if you are the correct shoe size!

For wetsuits and fins we will point you in the right direction to either hire or purchase for pretty much the same price!

  • Diving with your own gear is always more comfy and effective, so if you love what you currently use, please bring it!

    • Mask & snorkel

    • Fins

    • Weight belt (if you have weights and you’re driving in, please bring them!)

    • Wetsuit, 3 - 5mm will be great.

    • Hood & socks if you have them

  • We love that you’re an independent traveller like us! Good for you!! Boat life is intimate as it is and the accommodation is set up as double cabins so ideally if you know someone to join you, this will be more comfortable. However if you are on your own and we have another single traveller we can introduce you to each other prior to the trip so it’s not a full on sleeping buddy surprise! All bedding will ensure each individual has their own blanket and sheets to avoid doona stealing scenarios ;) The rooms are spacious however keep in mind it is a boat, not a house.

  • Yes! We have a specific facebook group for our Expeditioners where we share travel hacks, how to prepare your bod, where to book accomodation and so on! You are in good hands.

  • No animal encounter is guaranteed. The vessel we will be living on does not hold the special license required to swim with whale sharks commercially. However nothing is stopping the whale sharks from coming to say hello when we are snorkelling or diving, we could get lucky. We reccomend our guests to book on with a whale shark tour operator after our trip to ensure they swim with these bucket list creatures.

TESTIMONIALS

“Had the most sensational experience with Liv for The Sea. Liv & Georgie make the perfect team - supporting everyone so lovingly for their introduction to free diving - we were absolutely spoilt with weather, and were fortunate enough to have some incredible encounters with whales, dolphins & other marine life ! The girls catered for us in all ways - making boat life as comfy as possible and ensuring our bellies were always full with delicious food. Couldn’t recommend this trip more, I’ve received way more than my moneys worth. Thank you girls & the grooviest skipper ! See you for Wave 2 !!!!!” - Gemma

“I had the best week of my life learning free diving techniques and achieving wave 1 accreditation. Who would have thought I would ascent 17m into the blue to whale song. Did I mention I was 57 and shared this fantastic life experience with my 26 yo daughter? Our instructors were the knowledgeable and truly beautiful - Liv and Georgie looked after us with theory, diving techniques, restaurant quality food, good company and so many laughs. We were captained by Flo who entertained us with a happiness always in his voice - not to mention his rapping skill and introducing us to Dingo Sungod. Our fellow divers shared such a love of the ocean and great outlooks on life. We had so much fun together and we laughed ourselves to tears. So many sweet girls now friends. The perfect weather over 5 days topped off our encounters with hundreds of tail slapping and breeching humpbacks, sharks, mantas, rays, squid, jellies, coral and thousands of tropical fish. I recommend this amazing trip to all with a love of the ocean. I continue to be in awe of what we achieved on this week at Ningaloo as I recount my memories.” - Julie

“The trip of a lifetime, impossible to put into words. Absolutely the best value for money experience you’ll find, this expedition is one of a kind. Liv and Georgie have really created something special with Liv for the Sea. We had the most perfect five days out on the water learning how to freedive. Liv and Georgie were the most patient, supportive and inspiring instructors that helped all of us reach our individual goals. I didn’t expect to love freediving down the line as much as I did, but I felt so safe and secure with Georgie and Liv by my side. Pure bliss to float out in the deep blue watching the sunbeams dance down to all the creatures below. My favourite part was using my new diving skills to explore the beautiful coral reef and live out my wildest mermaid dreams. The real magic was being out on the water surrounded by the best group of people, bought together by a common love and adoration for the ocean. We were serenaded underwater and endlessly entertained by hundreds of whales as they made their migration north with their curious new calves. We had the most insane weather and glassy conditions that made life on the cat a dream. We met so many sharks (my first hammer, tiger, bronzie, lemon and shovel nose!), heaps of turtles and were surprised on the line by a manta emerging from the blue. I got to SUP with dolphins at sunset and watch the reef wake up under me at sunrise. The froth onboard was contagious - so grateful to everyone, especially my mum for sharing this with experience with me. Once in a (super) blue moon kinda thing, quite literally.” - Grace

“I cannot speak highly enough of Liv and her crew, (Sandy and Flo). From the minute we met Liv we felt at home and inspired. Her love for the sea is infectious, making it even more special to be living above it. Freediving is an extreme sport and it can be scary. Liv always knew when to push and when to celebrate and I think that is what makes her the amazing instructor that she is. To sum up the experience, we met amazing people, had deep chats, watched incredible sunsets, ate and lived like queens and got to know ourselves better. Absolutely life changing.” - Tina

“Diving into the world of freediving on this trip has been an absolute game-changer. From a curious beginner, the expert guidance and immersive experience transformed me into a lifelong enthusiast. Liv and Georgie's passion is infectious, their knowledge unmatched, and their patience unwavering as they nurtured my skills and confidence in the water. They masterfully coaxed us to test our limits in a way that felt safe, secure and uplifting. Each dive was a life lesson, discovering a new sense of freedom. The camaraderie with our crew added an extra layer of joy to every session – cheering and celebrating our milestones together. Liv and Georgie, you rockstars, you've ignited a blazing passion to 'Liv for the Sea'. This trip was more than just a freediving course; it's a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and forging a deeper connection with the ocean. I'm forever grateful for this transformative experience that has not only taught me how to dive, but also how to truly live.” - Linda

“Liv has created the most phenomenal experience in one of the most incredible places in the world! Liv was the perfect guide. She provided us with so much support, safety and encouragement while learning to dive. She has a very personable and effortless way of teaching, her love of the ocean and life is truely inspiring.Onboard I felt completely looked after by Liv, Flo and Sandy. Food was amazing! The whole trip felt extremely balanced and catered to how we were feeling and our goals for the day. I came away from my time onboard feeling proud, strong, connected and extremely grateful. Cannot recommend this experience enough.” - Abby

“The experience of a lifetime and a true expedition. With an array of ages and various levels of freediving experience to cater to, Liv and Georgie ensured that every individual had the most memorable time possible. Every day brought spectacular marine interactions, both above and below the surface, delicious food and new adventures. We have all left with so many amazing memories and a boatload of new friends. If you love the ocean and are looking for something really unique this trip is a must. Highly recommend!” - Bianca

I had the most amazing time freediving and sailing the magical Ningaloo over 5 days. The views of the ocean and sky out at sea were mesmerising and we saw so many whales and dolphins every day I lost count. They made the most delicious plant based meals for me which I appreciated so much being the only vegan onboard. They helped me reach depths I didn’t think possible both out on the line and within myself - I could not have asked for more supportive or knowledgeable teachers to guide me on this journey. I left rejuvenated, with a deeper connection to the ocean, and my cup overflowing. Thank you Liv, Georgie and Flo!” - Yen

“How do I even start? The Expedition was so much more than I could've possibly expected. We got to experience all the magic the Ningaloo Reef has to offer and were able to challenge and push ourselves beyond what I ever thought I was capable to do. Liv is an amazing instructor who tailors everything to your goals with freediving. Liv and her wonderful crew give you an experience which feels like a holiday on the catamaran, with great food, lovely hospitality, and after five days you feel like a kind of family. I will never forget this experience. But moreover I will never forget the people and all those sunrises and sunsets we spent together with cups of tea laughing at the events of the day. Thanks Liv!” - Rachel

“Liv is one of the most genuine, down to earth and infectiously happy people anyone would have the pleasure to meet with an immeasurable amount of love and knowledge for the ocean. Her dive course felt like a vacation where she instilled her knowledge to us, rather than putting us through a course. The entire crew were great characters that had an innate ability to make you feel more than welcome on board their vessel. It was just a bunch of mates diving, sailing and enjoying the hell out of the ocean.” - Max

“What a truly phenomenal experience! Cannot speak highly enough of the amazing Liv and the crew she had with her! Their passion for the ocean was inspiring!! The 5 days went by so fast because it was just so much fun and so fulfilling. I personally experienced the most incredible motions! Being well out of my comfort zone in the open and deep water, Liv made the environment feel safer than I could have ever imagined and excited to continue being in such conditions. If you’re looking for some personal growth or just some general ocean fun, this woman will take you on an epic journey! My mind, body and soul felt this trip like no other! The appreciation I have for the ocean and the ecosystems/wildlife within it has grown so much! Thank you Liv for such a pure and joyful trip! Cannot wait to do it again!!!” - Tallara
