About Liv
Hello!
”I hope this finds you healthy and sun kissed! I am currently on Lord Howe Island exploring the unfamiliar world of scuba and getting to know a new marine ecosystem. I will be back in Exmouth next year so come and join me on an adventure on the Ningaloo Reef, I would be delighted to share my favourite place in the world with you!” - Liv
Liv has always grown up close to the sea...
As a Marine Biology graduate and qualified Freedive Instructor, Liv Rose always has one foot in the ocean. With salty hair and sandy feet, her spirit is washed with the ocean’s magic.
From a young age the need to be by the ocean came naturally for Liv. Weekends and holidays spent on boats, snorkelling down at the boat shed – every family holiday Liv and her family went on involved the ocean in one way or another.
Liv spent her summers spinning and twirling with the local dolphins of Port Phillip Bay. This is what they called work on a dolphin tour guide boat off the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. After a stint studying architecture and realising a life behind a computer wasn’t for her she found herself on a remote uninhabited island on the northern Great Barrier Reef. The true magic of Liv's time on the island came when she had to freedive to catch lunch for the guests on the boat, spear-fishing for painted crays, coral trout and red emperor. Providing for the guests was essential so returning to the boat empty handed wasn’t an option, this lead to Liv's intrigue with the underwater world. “I realised there was so much of the ocean’s ecosystem that I was yet to understand.”
There sparked her desire to learn more, later that year Liv enrolled into an Environmental Science (Marine Biology) Bachelor Degree at Deakin University in Warrnambool. A tiny town on Victoria’s wild west coast, it was four hours away from her family and friends where she didn't know a single soul, but it soon became more than her home.
Liv’s eagerness to explore and step outside of her comfort zone lead to a year on exchange at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. This year was pivotal for Liv, not only growing into herself but also establishing a path for her ambition and career. “Oahu is an adventurer’s wonderland – you can run through volcanic mountain tops, swim with dolphins and listen to whales sing under the sea all in the space of a few hours. The ease with which you can interact with marine creatures in Hawaii blew my mind, and made me realise that this is how I wanted to live.”
Liv's time in Hawaii also enabled her to advance as a freediver. “The underwater world is literally a playground of tunnels and slides and hidey-holes created by the ancient flows of lava.” Any chance Liv could, and she was out there exploring the depths of the islands.
Despite Hawaii's beauty, the islands are right in the middle of the floating Pacific garbage patch. The once pristine beaches are now littered with plastic and toxic human debris – in turn destroying the natural habitat and the wildlife that dwells within it. Liv had to show people what we are doing to our planet, our ocean...Liv For The Sea was born.
After finishing her degree, Liv embarked on Liv For The Sea mission– a portal that combines her knowledge as a Marine Biologist and Freedive Instructor to educate people about the state of our ocean. Liv strongly believes there is no better way to develop respect and understanding than by submerging yourself within.
